What is Shungite?

Shungite is a rare black crystal stone made of up to 99% carbon. It’s mainly found in a village in Karelia, Russia named Shunga.
The stone has a unique composition. It contains fullerenes or 3D spherical molecules made of 60 carbon atoms. These molecules are hollow and sometimes called buckyballs.
Shungite includes nearly every mineral on the periodic table, including fullerenes.

The origin of shungite is a mystery. Old forests are a common source of materials made of carbon. However, it is estimated that the stone is at least 2 billion years old. This is before organic life existed on the planet.
Some theories of shungite’s origins include:
  • Earth was hit by a large meteorite that deposited shungite
  • The formation of shungite was caused by microorganisms in nearby waters
  • Over time, sedimentary rocks have changed in their organic matter composition
Shungite’s fullerene content is credited with its potential benefits, despite the fact that scientists don’t know how the stone was formed or where it came from.
